Sabrent EC-UEIS7 external hard drive enclosure installation

I was looking around for an external hard drive (hdd) enclosure and found the Sabrent on TigerDirect. After reading the reviews, it seemed like people either loved them or hated them. The top two complaints that I read about were the fan quality and the lack of hard drive installation ease. Out of 144 reviews on TigerDirect, the Sabrent received a summary ranking of 4.3 as of this writing. I had a 500MD WD Caviar Black SATA hdd that needed a home. When I received the enclosure in the mail, it came ready to function with an IDE drive and molex power connector. I unplugged the connectors and put on the enclosed SATA and power connectors and was off and running.

Installation was relatively simple. The first step is to take off the 4 screws on each side of the enclosure and then one screw each on the top and bottom of the enclosure so that you can secure the hdd. Next, take your hdd and place it in the enclosure. Don’t screw it in yet as you have to connect your SATA and power connectors. Once you do this, you can gently place the hdd in the unit and secure it with the enclosed screws. It was a tight fit, but not overly so. Next, place the side cover on and screw it down. The cabling presses against the cover as you push down, but nothing to frightening. The drive also came with driver software, but it was not needed.

After less than a month, the hdd enclosure fan died on me. Actually, the whole damned thing died on me. The LED in the front of the enclosure no longer illuminates and the hdd is no longer recognized. Scratch $30 down the drain. Next time, buy something with passive cooling.

I bought this because you did (sorta!)

Have it all hooked up, but Vista does not see it. What am I not doing right?

I plugged it into one of the open USB ports on the front of the dell.

    Help :)

Make sure that your connectors are properly installed, turn on the power switch, install the appropriate drivers from the CD, and reboot. You might want to use the USB ports on the back of the computer, as they are directly soldered to the motherboard.

Please note that this enclosure is no longer functioning less than a month into its life. The reviews were not accurate for my experiences thus far.
