Beneath the Uspenski Cathedral in Helsinki, a new computer data center for the local IT services firm Academia, will heat nearly 500 homes with the excess heat produced from their servers. Water pipes that are channeled through residential homes in the area will receive warmth from modern technology.
A typical datacenter uses 40-45 percent of its energy for operation of the servers and the remaining for cooling. Data centers such as those operated by Google currently use 1% of the world’s energy. The enegy savings from this project will create heat for homes and reduce cooling costs by a projected $561,000. Both parties involved believe that the arrangement will be a win-win.
