Ford’s next evolution of the Sync in-car entertainment and info system will use a USB mobile broadband modem to supply secure wireless connectivity to devices inside the vehicle. The downside is that you have to provide the modem. Ford is simply giving you the receptacle to hookup, not necessarily the turn-key internet solution. But, it is in the right direction.
It also looks as if you will not need a subscription or additional hardware, beyond the modem of course. In other words, there would not an additional internet bill at your mailbox for use of this technology. It would be another option with your purchase.
Ford is not informing the public which vehicles might include this technology next year. I guess that you will have to wait.
Several automakers in Japan have offered the technology in vehicles since 1997. Mercedes has tested technology applications inside their car to include web browsing, VOIP, and vehicle software updates using the prototype 4G network.
