Intel demonstrated their new 48-core Single Chip Cloud (SCC) CPU today. 100 of these chips will be distributed to reasearchers in 2010 for testing multicore system and software designs capable of tackling vision and speech. It really sounds as if Intel is trying to breach the barrier of AI! The chip consumes between 25 and 125 watts of power.
Two prototype towers were on display and capable of accomodating 64GB RAM. The cores are x86, so Windows and Linux can have a crack and running on the new chips.
