Several weeks ago, I began planning for the creation of an intranet for my employer. The development criteria were simple. The web applications must function in a Linux-Apache2-MySQL-PHP5 (LAMP) environment and be Open-Source. Here is a summary of what worked and did not.
Final Summary
- Dedicated tower with 1GB RAM, 2.0Ghz P4 processor, no graphics card, Ubuntu Server 8.10, serving a maximum of 17 concurrent users.

- Integration of Scuttle social bookmarking application
- Micro blog with web link and RSS functionality
- Homepage includes RSS feed from blog, micro blog, and relevant federal agencies
