The recent Google outage has forced me to read about all of the hack theories and other potentially catastrophic effects to our system of communication. When in fact, the outage was caused by Google iteself routing traffic through Asia. Essentially, Google created a bottleneck for itself and plugged up the pipes. Take a look at how the internet traffic across the globe is affected.
This graph was created by Arbor Networks. Arbor has made it one of their missions to catalogue and analyze cyber threats around the globe. They are responsible for the Active Threat Level Initiative (ATLAS), the world’s first gloabally scoped threat analysis network. Their homepage summarizes the Top Attacks for the day, Top Scanned Services, and Top Threat Sources. The information is really quite interesting as it shows you, on a global scale, who, what, and where the top cyber threats are derived.
As a nation, Americans seem to feel like they are being attacked by nations like Iran, China, and Libya. In fact, the statistics at ATLAS indicate that the United States is the top threat among cyber warfare!I would recommend taking a look at this site. If not for the security of your own system, give it a look because it is damned interesting!
