Quick Fix for corrupted Genuine Advantage files

Last week, I had a surprisingly pleasant email conversation with an MS representative about my Office software Validation. I purchased Office in 2002. Only recently, MS Validation checker reported a non-Genuine product. After contacting MS and their email representatives, I received a fix to the annoying Validation errors on my software. Here was the fix for corrupted Genuine Advantage files.

Click Start, and then click Computer.

On the Organize menu, click Folder and Search Options.

On the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

Click the “Start” Button, in “Start Search” box, type: “%systemroot%\System32″ (without quotes) and press Enter.

In the open system32 folder, look for following files.

OGAEXEC.exe

OGACheckControl.dll

OGAAddin.dll

OGAVerify.exe

Right-click rename them to

OGAEXEC.old

OGACheckControl.old

OGAAddin.old

OGAVerify.old

Note: If the OGAVerify.exe cannot be found, please disregard it.

Review and installation of the new prospective GnomeTools panel and window manager.

Yesterday, I read about a new Gnome window manager called Gnome tools. When KDE4.2 arrived, many of us in the Linux community were amazed at the beauty of this new product. It had a feel somewhere between Aero and openSuse. Even with that said, I still prefer Gnome because of its simplicity and functionality. Back on topic…

GnomeTools is the new alpha alpha version of Gnome panel and window manager. Test installation requires Gnome 2.26 or higher, which means that Ubuntu 8.04 will not function – I tried… I’ll get to it, here is a screenshot (photo credit).

Installation

You can try out GnomeTools with the following terminal commands.

curl -O http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gnome-shell/plain/tools/build/gnome-shell-build-setup.sh

/bin/bash gnome-shell-build-setup.sh

jhbuild build

jhbuild build -f -a -c

cd ~/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell/src

./gnome-shell --replace

The commands above will replace the current Gnome panel. If you would like to run a nested shell, follow the directions posted here.

Results

Initially, I tried out the procedure using a VMware image of Ubuntu 9.04. My build process was still going after 4 hours, so I aborted and moved on to try it on a real 9.04 installation. After 2 hours of waiting for the build process, I aborted again. Hopefully, you will read this, try it on your machine, and get back to me with the results! Also, if anyone is successful in creating a VMware Image (.vmx), I would be happy to host the download. Good luck!

RAID1 installation notes that worked for me.

I have installed several RAID1 configurations and thought that I might document them here for others to gain from my painful experiences. There are so many RAID tutorials on the internet that it is overwhelming. Even after reading all of them, I still managed to make errors. The important aspect of this is that I have corrected them and have a bomb proof server.

INSTALLATION

A RAID1 installation requires 2 identical hard drives (they can be different capacit drives but need to be of the same brand and model). Using your Ubuntu Server install CD, create 3 partitions that are RAID arrays. I used three partitions because it works well. 1 partition of 1GB for the boot loader, 1 partition of 2GB for the swap, and the remaining space for your distribution. Back to the installation… I created these 3 partitions on each drive and made them RAID (not ext3 – that will come later). When you are done with that, create a RAID MD device (actually 3 of them) You have to remember which partitions are for what. For instance, sda1 and sdb1 are for the /boot and so on. the RAID MD is where you specify ext3, swap, and /boot.

Finish the installation and verify your installation with the commands below.

Verify your md0, md1, and md2 software RAID partitions with the command below. You need to check all of your md* partitions to ensure that you did your job correctly. Initially, you should see that your array is syncing as a percentage. Depending on your hard drive size and processor, it could take 30 minutes to several hours to complete the mirroring.

sudo mdadm --detail /dev/md0

Another classic command is:

sudo cat /proc/mdstat

If all is well, you should see something like this.

md2 : active raid1 sdb3[0] sdc3[1]
242236032 blocks [2/2] [UU]

md4 : active raid1 sdb2[0] sdc2[1]
1951808 blocks [2/2] [UU]

md3 : active raid1 sdb1[0] sdc1[1]
979840 blocks [2/2] [UU]

More useful RAID diagnostic and fstab commands in RAID1 Installation Part2

Trials and tribulations with reinstalling Ubuntu Server 8.04

I configured a RAID1 Ubuntu Server 8.04 box several months ago. I was fairly pleased with the results until I realized that I had configured the RAID for my “/” directory only. My partition schema was /boot, swap, /, and /webserver. My RAID1 was only mirroring my “/” installation. I reinstalled everything after thoroughly backing up my files. I made several mistakes along the way. Here they go…

fstab

I saved most of the .conf files along the way including the fstab. But, what I realized is that the UUID’s for my old schema were not the same as my current configuration. Therefore, I had to reinstall twice because I was stupid! Several posts indicated that a user could run a LiveCD and copy the fstab from the directory. However, as I found out, the LiveCD’s only mount swap partitions and not the drives. The best solution was to reinstall and immediately make a copy of the fstab and put it in the /etc/ directory.

sudoers

Next, I tried to add my username to the /etc/sudoers file using vi. Unfortunately, I made a syntax error and basically locked myself out of sudo. The solution was to use a LiveCD of Ubuntu Server and edit the sudoers file using /usr/sbin/visudo. The best way of adding your username to the sudoers file is by the following Terminal command:

sudo adduser user-name root

Much better than trying to edit the sudoers file!…

The next task was to add the 9 domains to my apache directory and configure bind for all of them. I am telling you now, make sure that you backup all of your files before you reinstall. Here was my list:

ssh, fail2ban, bind9, apache, web files, interaces, resolv.conf, hosts, smb.conf, php.ini, and ufw
